Last week we looked at collaboration overall on the Billboard Hot 100 charts from 2023 to 2024. You can find that post here if you’re curious. Now we dive into the data a bit deeper and look at in-genre and cross-genre collaboration. And if you’re new, you can find details about me and this data project here.
Noteworthy:
Pop is the only genre that is becoming less collaborative all around.
Urban and Latin artists collaborate with artists of the same genre a lot.
Who Benefits From Which Kind?
When I asked my custom ChatGPT about this, it suggested a scoring system that compares in-genre and cross-genre collaborations based on individual time-weighted average chart performance in the Hot 100, modified by rates of top 10 appearance:
Noteworthy:
When Latin artists find the right cross-genre collab, they can do really well.
Considering the strength of in-genre collabs for Pop it’s odd that the rate of them is declining.
